Art

All is Art, everyday create, everyday make beauty. Art is our human homage to nature. Bite through the chains that bind you to live a life of inspiration. If they ever tell you don't make Art, don't be creative, don't be inspired, understand they are saying to you.. don't be alive.

'Water water everywhere but not a drop to,...'

This installation places objects found in a hanging swamp in the Blue Mountains near Katoomba in glasses of water, highlighting the plight of our natural water filtration system and our drinking water being polluted with highly toxic materials from, run off, waste and leakage from the nearby Katoomba tip/dump.

This pollution not only enters drinking water for the Sydney basin, but also effects endangered species such as the giant dragonfly, petalura gigantea. Critically endangered and endemic to the Blue Mountains upland swamps.

Beyond Reason

A living art novel by Kate Reid

I have written this work over the last 3yrs in order to work through my own pain and agony over our current Global crisis, our continued destruction of nature,.. and our own destructive nature.

In my lifetime I have seen the human population more than double and humans enact mass extinction on other species across the planet, through our seemingly unstoppable greed.

Extinctions which continue every second of everyday.

I have written this as my own protest.

As the words in this art novel travel on their journey, may they somehow,.. move, alter, alert, and however small, make a change or a ripple in the flow to help us to see and make the changes in behaviour, focus and direction that we so desperately and currently require.

I am sending this out into the world to be read, re-read and to forge its own existence.

I am also printing, on recycled paper, around 50 numbered hard copies which I am hand binding and which I will set free to be passed around, to see where they end up.

There will be room in the back of these hard copies for notes to be written by the readers before they pass them on, so they will also, hopefully, become living objects as they travel.

If people do get the hard copies I would love comments and possibly a photo of where the hard copies end up. I would also love to read comments about where people were and how they felt when they received or read them to be left in the fb group to collectivise our experience.

I aim to make one hard copy a day over COP26 2021 as my own way of staging protest. If you would like a hard copy to start one on its journey, please email me and I can post, (note: it may take some time to get to you of course and I am only making a select number. I will try to make 50 this year, they will all be numbered).

The image on the front cover of the work is one I drew in 1989, 30 years ago. The lion represents nature, the moth death. The lion is an apex predator but one which understands that to survive, all must be in balance. The protector, the arbitrator, is witnessing the balance tip, and death grow larger, unable to prevent it, castrated as the small fragile moth becomes the dominant force. The moth represents mindless destruction. Moths throw themselves at artificial light, unable to understand it is an artificial construct. The Moth is unable to stop itself in its instinctual behaviour. It is unable to understand its instinctual behaviour against a modern construct, it collides again and again, smashing itself with no ability to cease, until it dies, just as we are throwing ourselves into our own abyss, unable? to stop.. who knows. The lion is not a gender construct, it is merely a representation. We now know we need apex predators as much as the micro. It is all about the intricate, infinitesimal balance.

I hope you may be able to help me with this living art work and pass it on to see where it ends up. This work I set free to journey, how, and as, and where-ever it will.

If someone in the future does get handed a hard copy and the pages at the back are full, or if you fill them yourself, please could you then take it to a school or to a public library for me.

This work has its own manifesto.

Beyond Reason Manifesto:

Do no harm, do least harm, and make sure everything is in balance, everything.

How I am addressing this manifesto:

I respect and understand that every email I send has a cost and I will be aware of this and keep balancing the costs to the grid against environmental and social benefit.

I respect every work that I print and post has a cost and I will be aware of this and keep balancing the printing and mailing costs against social and environmental benefit.

I respect and understand that having a fb group has a cost and I will be aware of this and keep balancing this page/group's advocacy out against environmental and social benefit.

I will try at every moment and turn to ensure that all costs here are met by a social and environmental benefit.

One or two small people cannot change or fix 7.9billion issues, but 7.9billion small changes,.. can absolutely change, and even fix, the world.

This living earth is conscious, we need to tune into that again, because we are absolutely an integral and integrated part of that. We can be a positive influence, we really can. We need to wake-up and critically address the balance, right now, critically.

Do not leave it to those at COP26, 2021. It really is up to us all.

Thankyou, Kate

Prints

Patterns

Life through industrial pattern and detail. A series of images from Cockatoo Island, Sydney. We forge industries to make submarines on islands, then abandon them. The birds are back. This island was a place where they made submarines, now it is for birds, art, humans, nature and camping. Where are those submarines? Did we need them? Why do we still try to build weapons. Is this place our future, past, our learning? What is it's legacy?

Behind the Velvet Curtain

Circus Artists, Behind the Velvet Curtain. This series was about placing in front of the velvet curtain the stories you do not see from some of the strongest Artists in the World. I spent a day with each Artist creating films and photographys to commemorate their incredible personal strengths, the strengths behind the those which they showcased in their work as Circus Artists and Physical Performers. Together we brought to the focus the impacts of physical injuries, severe accidents, chronic conditions and serious illness on their work as Circus Artists. Having to be so strong, so fearless and so transparent on the stage, and in the air, even when in the physical and mental body off the stage, life is incredibly difficult. Each Artist was photographed as part of a live performance between the Artist, myself and the camera using physical props such as skeins of wool, stethoscopes, boob cakes, elastic and feathers that represented, reflected or refuted their personal storys and situations. As the Artists moved on their chosen apparatus, they reflected back the physical and mental memories wrapped up between their bodies, their Circus apparatus, and their lives. These works were produced as a series during Artist residency at The Red Rattler, Sydney. Oct to Dec, 2018

    The Belvederes

If we do not pay attention to the past, we will fail at the future.

The Belvederes was envisaged before the Covid-19 to look at the impending 'apocalypse' and its effect on Art and Artists. The works look at the changing style of Art reflecting on renaissance vs graffiti, the detail of baroque vs bereft. Attention to detail, creation. Lack of attention to detail equals destruction.

These pieces, combine circus, dance, music and costumery. The photography and the film 'Art and the Apocalypse' were created with the support of The Freestyle Orchestra.

    The Piano Wall

When you have no country you have no place to put your feet.
Filmed in Carrara, Italy at Studio Alnassar these pieces are part of a photographic exhibition and short film. The 4min long film was created from a one hour long duration installation homage to everyone who lives or has lived, without a country, or a place or a people. The work was performed in front of Usama Alnassar's sculpture wall. The wall with gaps, piano with missing keys, some sounds you hear but you can not play anymore. Losing place. Drifting. The sound track was performed by Usama Alnassar on lute for the duration.
    The film is called 'Suspended'
